A look inside Villa Gaura: Scandinavian living with a personal touch
We step inside the home of Mirjam and her family, a place that breathes calm, light, and character. Built ten years ago as part of a unique project, the design stands out from the typical new-build houses. Classic details and a thoughtful layout give it personality. The house was named Villa Gaura. A nod to Mirjam’s dream of one day living in a villa, surrounded by Gaura flowers.
"I’m a calm person, and I think that naturally reflects in my interior."
Natural serenity with a creative edge
Anyone who has followed Mirjam on Instagram for a while knows her love for interiors runs deep. From a young age, she was already rearranging furniture in her bedroom and playing with color. It’s no surprise then, that her home feels like a carefully thought-out space. Her style leans lightly Scandinavian, with plenty of natural tones and a calm foundation.
"It’s fun to look at trends, but I consciously choose items I won’t grow tired of quickly."
Where her home once embraced bold colors, sandy shades and soft beiges now set the tone. Still, she keeps things lively by playing with accents through accessories. By regularly swapping out rugs or cushions, she creates a fresh look time and again-without losing her serene style.
The perfect sofa for the living space
A comfortable sofa is the heart of any living room. For Mirjam, it was important that the sofa wasn’t just cozy but also fit seamlessly into the bigger picture. She discovered By SIDDE through social media, and the models immediately caught her eye. The standard dimensions turned out to be just a bit too small, but with the launch of the XL version of the Sommer sofa, the decision was quickly made.
"When I saw the XL version of the Sommer sofa, I knew: this is the perfect fit for our space."
During a weekend getaway, she visited the showroom in Eerbeek, and not long after, the sofa was delivered to her home. In a warm beige tone, it blends beautifully with her interior. Thanks to a clever adjustment to the wall, where there used to be double doors, extra space was created for the sofa. A change that brought calm and functionality.
Personal touches with a story
Mirjam’s home radiates personality. Not through bold colors, but through details that tell a story. Take the iconic design lamp next to the sofa, for example. She’s owned it for over twenty years, and although the shade has been reupholstered several times, its latest beige cover that makes it a timeless piece. To this day, she still gets questions about it on her Instagram @villagaura.
"That lamp has moved with me for twenty years, and now it’s completely back in style."
The large plant in the living room is also no coincidence. Thanks to the open layout of the house, Mirjam felt confident enough to make a bold green statement. Custom furniture, like the TV cabinet and kitchen, further add to the clean and balanced look. Everything feels harmonious without being overwhelming.
Living and life in balance
The family enjoys both indoor and outdoor living. The choice for French doors opening to the front garden was deliberate, it’s the perfect spot to soak up the evening sun. Inside, the kitchen is a much-loved place. Her husband often cooks while Mirjam keeps him company. The raised kitchen counter adds a bar-like vibe, ideal for a casual drink with friends or hosting birthdays.
"The front garden catches the evening sun, so we really wanted to make the most of it."
Mirjam finds inspiration in interior magazines, social media, vacations, and hospitality design. Besides photography, she also enjoys DIY projects, provided she has both the idea and the time to bring it to life. There are plenty of plans still: a sliding wall under the patio roof, an attic renovation, or maybe even designing a detached home one day. Yet her love for their current home remains strong- Villa Gaura truly feels like home.
Before we leave this beautiful place, Mirjam shares one last valuable tip:
"Stay true to yourself. Choose a good sofa and a kitchen you’ll love for years, the rest you can always replace."
